There’s no longer any need to venture abroad in order to have the full-on summer holiday experience. Forget the headache of searching for your passport in a frantic panic, days before you’re due to fly or the nightmare of airport delays. It’s time to explore what our beautiful country has to offer. Yes, staying in the UK is the new holidaying abroad.

Located on the North Cornwall coast, with stunning sandy beaches and incredible surfing locations, Newquay is a thriving holiday destination for thrill seekers and families alike. Natural Retreats Fistral Beach is one of the most sought-after coastal destinations in the UK and an ideal base for Newquay’s championship surfing beach. So, if you’re planning a summer holiday in Cornwall this year, why not combine your break with a trip to the world-renowned surfing and music event?

Relentless Boardmasters in Association with Vans returns from 4-8th August 2010. Fistral Beach hosts this exhilarating sporting festival where more than 200 international surfers gather to compete for £60,000 prize money. Fistral will also host the Relentless Aerial Assault whereby surfers are catapulted into waves via jet ski offering speed to perform manoeuvres never seen in standard contest surfing. For 29 years, Europe’s most famous surf, skate and music festival has attracted big names in its specialist fields and 2010 promises to be as exciting. While surfing is the roots of the Relentless Boardmasters, Vert skateboarding has also been a part of the festival for over 10 years. It’s no longer simply a regional surf contest, it’s a lifestyle festival and this summer you can be part of it.

Past Boardmasters have been known to attract over 150,000 adrenalin junkies to Newquay. Imagine it – over five days of surf, sand and (hopefully) sun – you can soak up the enlivening atmosphere, relax on the beach with some food and then make the convenient five minute walk back to your luxurious Natural Retreats residence, Fistral Beach to unwind on your private balcony or secluded courtyard and watch the Fistral sunsets over the lapping Atlantic waves. Natural Retreat luxury 2 and 4 bedroom apartments range from three penthouse apartments with unsurpassed views of Fistral beach and the bay beyond to our garden apartments, each with their own private courtyard, each one has been built to exceptional standards of design and quality, sleeping up to 8 people in luxury and comfort.

Set in possibly the UK’s most beautiful festival setting, the Boardmasters Music festival takes place over two nights from 6-7th August on the cliff top at Watergate Bay and over its 4 years has witnessed some of the biggest acts to ever play the South West, such as Razorlight, James Blunt, Feeder and Groove Armada, to name a few. Perched above the beach, the Relentless Beach Bar is a bespoke venue that by day, provides the perfect location to relax on the terrace watching the best surfers in the world and by night transforms into the ideal intimate setting for lucky tickets holders to watch some of the best in established and up and coming music talent. So, if you want to watch the legendary Nuts Boardmasters Bikini contest whilst enjoying a cool beer and a BBQ or you’re more into your music scene, check out the entertainment schedule.

The Relentless Boardmasters has something for everyone, making it the perfect family summer break – there certainly won’t be any complaints from the kids that they’re bored! From folk to dance and hip-hop, three stages of live music and DJs create the party atmosphere, whilst the skating, surfing and BMX competitions capture the imagination of the adrenaline junkies amongst you, so there really is something for everyone. And if you like to shop, there’s the chance to visit the famous surf village where you can purchase all the latest surf gear at great prices.

So whether you’re looking for a week of indulgence or a week long adrenalin rush, with a Natural Retreats residence as your base, exploring Fistral Beach is the ultimate family-orientated staycation! We still have availability at our stunning Fistral Beach holiday residences for the week of the Boardmasters, but with it being such a popular annual event, you’ll have to act fast if you want a piece of the action.

A Natural Retreats holiday in Cornwall not only offers the chance to explore the amazing Cornish beaches or marvel at the stunning scenery; it also provides the opportunity to be part of the many family events hosted by the region throughout the year. Take Falmouth for instance; it has many great museums, a wealth of maritime culture and is home to one of the largest sailing regattas in the South West.

Plans for Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week 2010 are well under way, so why not be part of this prestigious event? From 7 – 14 August, a winning combination of yacht races and a packed schedule of lively shore-side activities will see 80,000 extra visitors come to the town compared with every other week in August. Henri-Lloyd Falmouth Week is the largest regatta in the South West, rivalled only by Cowes Week and has evolved into a family friendly festival. More than 450 yachts will race in 3 fleets over 8 days and that’s just for starters.

What better way to spend a week than by indulging in some Cornish luxury self-catering with a beautiful Natural Retreats residence as your base for visiting this massive sailing regatta? The week’s events have been carefully planned to combine the traditional elements with a fresh spirited list of entertaining events designed to enhance the days sailing attractions. The traditional aspect of Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week remains the Falmouth Classics Yacht event, Henri Lloyd Dinghy Week and racing for over 26 different classes of yachts, hosted by the seven Sailing Clubs and the Regatta committee around Falmouth Bay.

It’s a Family Affair

The family-friendly fun kicks off with the Falmouth Classics event and a spectacular Marching Carnival. Throughout the week a variety of activities at Events Square, the Princess Pavilion, Maritime Museum and Pendennis Castle will involve local businesses, town residents and the wider community. Surf Life Saving GB will be holding their National Championships for over 1000 Surf Life Savers aged 7 to 70 plus at Gyllyngvase Beach all week – the biggest event of its kind ever to be staged in Falmouth. Traditional craft and dinghies can be seen in the waters of Falmouth Bay, the Carricks and the Harbour and with six days of match racing for keelboats and an awe-inspiring aerial display by the Red Arrows you’ll never be stuck for something to watch, whether it’s out at sea or in the air.

Back on the shore, a lively schedule of entertainment is planned throughout the day and evening. The launch of an impressive new 30 metre, purpose built, Island bar is sure to add to the celebratory atmosphere. 2010 also sees the return of the popular Falmouth Fun Night at Custom House Quay, with a return challenge between the Falmouth Marine Band and the Falmouth Working Boat Association- they will be re-enacting Custer’s last stand at the Battle of Little Big Horne – you won’t want to miss it. Alongside the highly anticipated Caribbean Night visitors can look forward to BBQ’s, a “Deck Shoes & DJs” Casino evening and a Champagne Day on the last Saturday. The finale to an incredible week is a magnificent firework display over the Harbour.

Events are not limited to Falmouth, so if you want to venture out and explore Cornwall, take advantage of the special activities planned in St Mawes, Mylor and Flushing. With so much happening, you can’t fail to keep the kids entertained and with a bit of luck, they’ll be so worn out, you’ll have no problems at bedtime! And, if you’re exhausted by all the activity, you can retreat to your holiday haven. Your Natural Retreats residence is the perfect country sanctuary built to exceptional design standards. Choose between our 3 and 4 bedroom holiday residences, built to exceptional standards of design and quality. Superb, stylish interiors are complemented by luxurious furnishing and equipped to the highest standards to offer a luxurious stay in a favourite British location. Conveniently located within easy reach of Cornwall’s most renowned tourist attractions including the Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Helligan, numerous picturesque fishing villages along the beautiful South Coast and acclaimed restaurants, you’ll never be stuck for something to do.

Once you’ve witnessed all this fantastic week has to offer and have soaked up the incredible atmosphere, you’re sure to be hooked, so don’t forget to book your Cornish Natural Retreats Residence for next year so you can relive the fun all over again!

Even with a rush of bookings this year, we still have availability this summer at our Natural Retreats Cornish residences, so don’t miss out!

Luxury self catering holiday accommodation Cornwall

Natural Retreats Fistral Beach is one of the most sought after coastal locations in the UK, so our luxury self-catering residences overlooking the beach are the perfect setting for that much needed family beach holiday. Fistral Beach, renowned as the UK’s best surfing break, is a convenient five minute walk from your our luxury self catering residences. With acres of sand and rock pools to play in, this could be your dream holiday. Don’t let that dream turn into a nightmare.

Every summer, lifeguards respond to thousands of incidents on UK beaches. Last year RNLI Lifeguards saved more than 60 lives and assisted 10,000 people. You can find out more about the invaluable service they provide to seaside visitors at www.rnli.org.uk/what_we_do/lifeguards/
Big kids and little kids alike will have an amazing time playing in the sea or splashing around in the rock pools, but don’t get caught out by the tide. Many of the lifeguard rescues could be avoided by beach goers having greater awareness of when the tide comes in by checking the times of the tide at www.bbc.co.uk/weather/coast/tides/.

And it’s not just accidents in the sea that can spoil your seaside fun. As much as we love it when the sun is shining, we are all aware of the dangers it can present. Many happy holiday makers fall foul to sunstroke by failing to keep themselves hydrated. And while you may covet a healthy tan, no one wants their holiday ruined by painful, unsightly sunburn. The NHS Sun protection site www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Summerhealth/Pages/Sunprotectioneyesandskin.aspx is packed full of advice on protecting your eyes and skin from harmful UV rays and protecting yourself from skin cancer. Your Natural Retreats holiday at Fistral Beach should be one to remember for all the right reasons. A day on the beach can be great fun for all the family if you avoid danger and follow some simple tips as outlined by the NHS:

  • Always swim at a beach patrolled by lifeguards
  • Never swim alone
  • Never use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas
  • If you get into trouble in the sea, put your hand in the air and shout for help
  • If you see someone in trouble, inform a lifeguard immediately
  • Supervise children at all times
  • Be informed about the beach you are visiting. Check the weather forecast and tide times
  • Don’t venture into the sea after drinking alcohol
  • Know your flags, so you know where it’s safe to swim
  • Make sure you have plenty to drink
  • Always wear high protection sun cream, protect your eyes with sunglasses and cover up with a hat

These tips are part of a useful article compiled by the NHS on all aspects of beach safety. For more information on staying safe during your seaside adventures, you will find further essential advice at http://www.nhs.uk/livewell/healthyholidays/pages/beachsafety.aspx that will help you to play safe in the sun this summer.

In the back of our minds we’ve always known our country is as beautiful as any. But in the rush to travel and see the world, it sometimes feels as though we’ve neglected the benefits of home. This year, as staycations are set to soar again, we’re reacquainting ourselves with just what it means to holiday in Ireland.

From the simply stunning south west coast of Ireland, through the breathtaking counties of Kerry, Cork, Limerick and Roscommon, Natural Retreats is changing the way self catering holidays and short break holidays are viewed in Ireland. No longer the poor relation of other holidays, self catering options now include some of the best accommodation and facilities imaginable. Natural Retreats Parknasilla is located in the grounds of the world famous Parknasilla hotel and is able to take advantage of those wonderful facilities in what some would describe as one of the best locations in all of Ireland. Further on Natural Retreats Castlemartyr, just a short drive from Cork, offers sumptuous luxury and some of Ireland’s finest golf, a boast that could equally be made by Natural Retreats Adare Manor in County Limerick. Whilst Natural Retreats Kilronan Castle in County Roscommon offer regal splendour and luxury. All our locations offer luxury accommodation as well as access to wonderful spas complete with pools and treatments to make any stay special.

All locations are supported of course by our dedicated Reservations & Concierge Team who don’t just take your booking and arrange for the key to be picked up, but will also help you plan your stay, with ideas for day trips and things to do in the unlikely event of a grey day! They’ll even be on call during your stay for last minute help and advice or just to point you in the right direction for the best pub or restaurant nearby. (They’ll even book the table for you!)

Even with the increase in bookings this year there is still availability this summer at all Natural Retreats sites and some amazing deals.   For July and August Natural Retreats are still offering 7 nights for the price of 5 and an amazing 14 nights for the price of 10 at Natural Retreats Parknasilla and Natural Retreats Adare Manor. Sometimes out of adversity comes an opportunity to experience something new and astonishing. As a combination of ash clouds and air strikes threatens to turn holidaying abroad into a travelling nightmare more people are choosing to holiday at home this year. Weekend breaks and short break holidays are set to soar through the summer as people rediscover the pleasures of a UK holiday. But those expecting a traditional holiday of their childhood with poor service and iffy accommodation might be in for a pleasant surprise. Self catering accommodation has undergone a renaissance in recent years and Natural Retreats is at the forefront of that change. From luxury self catering in Cornwall to holidays in the Yorkshire Dales and family holidays in the Llŷn Peninsula, the company has upped the standard of accommodation and service dramatically.

They’ll even be on call during your stay for last minute help and advice or just to point you in the right direction for the best pub or restaurant nearby. (They’ll even book the table for you!)

And the accommodation itself will take your breath away. From stunning self catering eco residences in the Yorkshire Dales, beautifully converted stone barns overlooking the Llyn Peninsula and brand new purpose designed luxury homes in the heart of Cornwall as well as luxury penthouse  apartments with views across one of the UK’s most famous beaches, there is a simply amazing choice for all kinds of holiday maker. From thrill seekers to those wishing to enjoy a quieter pace of life, Natural Retreats has catered for all tastes.

Perhaps the best part of any self catering holiday with Natural Retreats is the arrival. Whether you’re snaking through the country lanes of Cornwall, dropping down into the dramatic Yorkshire Dales setting or leaving the majestic Snowdonia behind you as you ease into the tranquil beauty of the Llyn Peninsula, you’ll be overcome by one thought. “Why haven’t I done this more?”  After all there are few experiences in holidaying quite like that of realising just what is available on your own doorstep and what you might have missed all these years!

Kerry nice indeed: Parknasilla resort focus of News of the World travel special

STUNNING SCENES from the coastline and pretty villages of south west Ireland were the focus of newspaper travel pages and a Hollywood movie this weekend.

New rom-com flick LEAP YEAR hit cinemas on Friday and sees DOUBT actress AMY ADAMS racing around the County Kerry coastline in a bid to propose to her boyfriend on February 29. But Adams instead ends up falling for Brideshead Revisited heartthrob MATTHEW GOODE who plays a Kerry innkeeper.

And on Sunday, the News of the World highlighted the beautiful Ring of Kerry, which is widely regarded as the “Lake District” of Ireland. The main travel feature focused specifically on the luxury self-catering residences of Natural Retreats in the mountain and coast retreat of Parknasilla. The 500-acre resort, which dates back to 1692, is nestled on the edge of a picturesque rugged coastline.

Referring to the chick flick Leap Year, the News of the World’s Amanda Evans said: “Ireland is the perfect destination for a proposal or any other celebration – including Mother’s Day on March 14. Think Ireland and think spa and retreat holidays with spectacular backdrops.

“No one takes the spa experience more seriously than the Irish and you are spoilt for choice. My mum and I arrived at the Parknasilla resort in Sneem on the west coast for a two-night break which surpassed all our expectations.

FOR LUXURY SELF-CATERING BARGAINS AT PARKNASILLA visit www.naturalretreats.com or call 0161 242 2970.

“Our three-bedroom semi-detached villa had access to all the hotel’s facilities. We even had a concierge service to help with queries – such as choosing one of the dozens of activities on offer, including seven mapped walks.

About Natural Retreats Parknasilla resort

  • By plane to Kerry: www.ryanair.com
  • By car: 1hr 45min drive from Kerry airport
  • Your welcome hamper includes a cheeky bottle of red and we stock the fridge with all the basics you need to kickstart your luxury short-break
  • Play golf on the private 12-hole course
  • Outdoor tennis and Petanque, a form of French boules
  • Croquet, archery, clay pigeon shooting, horseriding, bike hire and fishing are also available on site.

Evans continued: “In the evening we hit the Doolittle bar for cocktails. Aptly named, as on this break we did do very little except eat, drink and relax! The barman was great company and at the end of the night even drove us back to our villa to save us tottering back in our heels.

“The following morning after a hearty breakfast in our villa we headed to the stunning spa at the hotel which has breathtaking views over woodlands, parkland, Kenmare Bay and the Atlantic Ocean – even from the two Jacuzzis on the terrace.

“The hardest decision I had to make was which treatment to choose! I plumped for the hour-long tri-enzyme resurfacing facial and afterwards I was glowing. Dealing with all the stresses and strains of city living just slipped away – truly a Natural Retreat.

“Parknasilla summed up Ireland for me – beautiful scenery, great hospitality and complete relaxation. After his visit in 1909, the writer George Bernard Shaw described Parknasilla as ‘part of our dream world’ and as we drove away from the magical place I had to agree.”
